Announcing Exiles in Paradise - Émigré Composers in Hollywood

Exiles in Paradise, the March 2020 Naxos release featuring cellist Brinton Averil Smith and pianist Evelyn Chen, is now available.

Los Angeles in the early 20th century, although thriving, lacked the musical and cultural traditions of the major American and European cities. However, an influx of refugees, fleeing war and persecution in Europe, rapidly formed one of the most prolific communities of artistic talent in history, centered within a few square miles near Hollywood.

Featuring the music of Joseph Achron, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, George Gershwin, Leopold Godowsky, Louis Gruenberg, Erich Korngold, Sergey Rachmaninov, Miklós Rózsa, Arnold Schoenberg, Igor Stravinsky, Ernst Toch and Franz Waxman.
